INTERDISCIPLINARY ENVIRONMENTAL
EXPEDITIONS PROGRAM
Sisters IEE Program (Special Contributor). Transformative, Soul-Searching.
The Sisters High School Interdisciplinary Environmental Expeditions (IEE) Program,
founded during the 2000-2001 school year by educators Rand Runco, Rob Phelps, Glen
Herron, and Samra Spear, has transformed the educational landscape for SHS students.
The innovative IEE curriculum encompasses a diverse range of topics, from physical activity
and outdoor recreation to geology, literature, and social studies. Through this program,
students explore the ecological and cultural significance of their surroundings, participating
in activities like leave-no-trace camping, urban forestry studies, and environmental
restoration projects. With a rigorous selection process, SHS juniors apply for this high-
demand program, while seniors take on the role of interns and group leaders, fostering
leadership and environmental stewardship among peers. Over its 24-year history, the IEE
program has engaged thousands of students in annual treks through the Three Sisters
Wilderness, studies of the Deschutes Basin, and collaborations with local organizations,
including work on Whychus Creek restoration. Accolades for the IEE program abound, both
regionally and nationally. We proudly honor founders Rand Runco, Rob Phelps, Glen Herron,
and Samra Spear, and all those who have tirelessly made the IEE an incredible success.
